The Newport Beach we know today was once inhabited by the members of the Tongva and Juaneño/Luiseño nations for thousands of years. In the early 1600’s, at the request of the Spanish Empire, Sebastián Vizcaíno mapped the California coast. In the early 1800’s, Spanish explorer Jose Antonio Yorba was awarded a large land grant covering much of Orange County.
Eventually the ranchos in Orange County were sold and two visionaries jumped on the chance to own land in Southern California and they were both named, “James.” James McFadden and Jame Irvine had very different visions of what they would do with the land. Irvine sought to use the land for ranching, but McFadden decided to create a town by selling as many parcels of land as possible, establishing Newport Beach as an important early commercial center. The city of Newport Beach was incorporated on September 01, 1906. What James McFadden didn’t visualize is that eventually there would be tens of thousands of homes and thousands of businesses all with high-end roofs that needed to be maintained, repaired and sometimes replaced!
